Summer is here! With temperatures rising and your little ones as active as ever it’s important to keep them hydrated! That is why this month, The Children’s Learning Centers of Fairfield County Nutrition Team is highlighting the importance of water. Hydration is very important becaus low water intake can result in issues such as dehydration, bladder infection, confusion, headaches, constipation, kidney stones, and more.

Benefits of Drinking Water

  • Helps clear waste out of your bladder
  • Promotes good digestion health and prevents constipation
  • Helps to regulate body temperature and aides in blood circulation.
  • Protects the spinal cord, tissues and cushions joints.

Signs & Symptoms of Dehydration

  • Extreme thirst
  • Dry lips, eyes, and mouth
  • Peeing less frequently (less than 4 times a day)
  • Dark yellow or strong smelling pee
  • Feeling dizzy or light headed
  • Less active / Lethargic

When Does Your Body Need More Water?

  • In high temperatures
  • When you have a fever
  • When you’re physically active
  • When you’re experiencing diarrhea or vomiting

If you’re little one isn’t a fan of water, or isn’t drinking as often as you’d like, the nutrition team does have some tips for keeping them hydrated!

Make It Fun!

Buy Fun drink related things your child will be excited to use like cool water bottles, fun cups, silly straws or even fun shaped ice trays will make drinking water more enjoyable for them.

Be A Role Model

Drink and speak positively about water in front of your child when ever you can

Get Freezer Safe Bottles

Freeze some water bottles and carry them with you to have cold water throughout the day.

Eat Water-Rich Fruits & Veggies

Not only does this help with hydration but your child will be receiving a variety of  nutrients. Here are some water-rich fruit & veggies you could try to include in your next snack/meal.

  • Oranges
  • Peaches

  • Cucumber
  • Celery
  • Tomato
  • Zucchini
