At CLC, our Integrated Classrooms at the William Pitt and Maple Ave sites reflect our deep commitment to inclusion and equitable learning opportunities for all children. In partnership with Stamford Public Schools, we currently offer four integrated classrooms, serving a total of 11 children with specialized learning needs in nurturing, inclusive settings.
In partnership with Stamford Public Schools, children with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) receive specialized services within the classroom, supported by a dedicated Community-Based Preschool Special Education Teacher employed by Stamford Public Schools who collaborates closely with CLC educators. This co-teaching model allows for individualized instruction, small-group support, and differentiated learning throughout the school day.
The goal of our integrated model is to educate children in their least restrictive environment, where children who need extra support learn in inclusive classroom settings while promoting both academic and social growth. By learning alongside their peers, children benefit from skill modeling, relationship-building, and a strong sense of belonging within the classroom community.
“Integrated classrooms also provide meaningful benefits for families. Services are delivered on site, eliminating the need for additional transportation or transitions between programs — maximizing instructional time while making support more accessible for our shared families,” said Sarah McMackin, Director of School Readiness at CLC.
One of the most meaningful outcomes of our integrated classrooms is seeing children grow in confidence and independence. Marsha Guthrie, Director of Head Start highlights that many children begin receiving one to five hours of specialized support, and as they progress, some are able to reduce or end services. By the end of the year, they are able to finish the school year together with their peers, surrounded by friends who supported their journey.
